Arden Valley Road (Trail Crossing)
   Poor           Great

From Tiorati Circle go west on Arden Valley Road 0,3 miles to the trail crossing at the top of the ridge. No parking here, but ample parking available at Tiorati Circle. Fee charged in summer. See Mile 0.1
The trail crossing is 4.7 miles east of the intersection with NY 17 and Arden Valley Road (See Mile 5.5)
This is the the northern end of Section 11 and the southern end of Section 10. The northbound trail to Section 10 goes north while the southbound AT to Section 11 goes south. This point can be reached on foot by walking up Arden Valley Road from the parking area or by taking the blue-blazed access trail from the parking area and then following the AT north for about 0.1 miles to the road. (See Mile 0.1) The marker on the attached map indicates the approximate location of the trail crossing. Three is a picture of the crossing in the pictures for this section. The parking area at Tiorati Circle can also be reached from the west by following Arden Valley Road for 5 miles from its intersection with NY 17A. Tiorati Circle parking is 10.00 per car during park season (when beach area is open). If you arrive before the parking attendant (9 am) or off season, you can park for free. Led a hike with 11 people down to Elk Pen on 6/15/2019 and no problem parking a total of 7 cars. (revalidated April 2024 by DA) 50

Arden Valley Road (Tiorati Circle Parking)
   Poor           Great

Take Exit 18 from Palisades Parkway towards west US6. In a short distance there is large traffic circle (Long Mt. Circle). Go onto westbound Seven Lakes Drive. Tiorati Circle near Lake Tiorati is 3.8 miles down this road. At the circle go west on Arden Valley Road. The parking area is on the left in a short distance. Fee charged in summer. Currently (2018) I believe it is $10. GPS of entrance to parking area N41.2755 W74.0887
The parking area at Tiorati Circle can also be reached by following Arden Valley road east for 5 miles from the intersection with NY 17 (See Mile 5.5). The parking area will be on the right (south).
The attached map shows the area around Tiorati Circle. The marker indicates the approximate entrance to the parking area which is south of Arden Valley Road. The entrance station can be seen in the street view to the west from the point where Arden Valley Road meets the circle. The are also pictures among those for Section 11. A blue-blazed trail leads 0.3 miles from the west side of the parking lot to the AT, meeting it just south of Arden Valley Road. The intersection with the AT is near the water tower visible in the lower left of the satellite view on the map. Go right (northbound) on the AT to Arden Valley Road and the south end of Section 10. Go left (southbound) to continue southbound in Section 11. See Parking Safety for more comments on facilities at or near the parking area.

FYI, If you park off-season there is no parking fee. (revalidated April 2024 by DA)

Island Pond Road
   Poor           Great

From the intersection of NY 17 and Arden Valley Road (see Mile 5.5), follow the latter east. In approximately 1.4 miles, a gated gravel road comes in from the right. There is a 'Welcome to Island Pond' here. People with permits may drive in to the pond. There is a parking lot on the northwest corner of Island Pond. I saw a car parked at the intersection with Arden Valley Road, but I assume the prohibitions against parking along the road in Harriman State Park are in force here as well so that this car was parked illegally. This should probably be considered as a drop-off point only. The marker on the attached map shows the approximate location of the intersection with Arden Valley Road. The gravel road can be followed towards Island Pond. The AT crosses in 0.3 miles just northwest of the pond. The northbound trail goes left, the southbound trail goes right. 2/17/20 Drop-off point only. parking or access by permit only. Strictly enforced.

Elk Pen Parking Area
   Poor           Great

See Mile 5.5. From the intersection of NY 17 and Arden Valley Road, follow the latter east 0.3 miles east.White blazes lead to parking area along road. The parking area is on the right. Make sure turn has Harriman State Park sign and hiker logo. Arden Road is .7 miles away and many GPS coordinates lead there. From the trail crossing of NY 17, the AT follows Arden Valley Road east. In 0.3 miles after crossing over the Thruway, the entrance to the Elk Pen parking area is on the right. In perhaps another 100 yards the trail goes right into the woods. The marker on the attached map indicates the entrance to the Elk Pen parking area. Northbound leads to popular "Lemon Squeezer" and Southbound leads to "Agony Grind" (revalidated in April 2024 by DA) 30 or more. Back in if possible. I have seen some tight, inexplicable parking. 3/4 full at least on winter weekends.

This point may also be reached from the south by taking Exit 15B off the New York Thruway (I-87) and going north on NY 17 for about ten miles. This is about two miles north of the community of South fields. Before the intersection there is a sign stating that a turnoff to Harriman State Park is 3/4 of a mile ahead. There is hiker logo at the intersection itself. For many years there has been a pay phone at the intersection. As noted above there is no parking here, but extensive parking 0.3 miles away at the Elk Pen parking area. The marker on the attached map indicates the intersection which is the official north end of Section 12 and south end of Section 11. Rotate the street view to the east to see Arden Valley Road which the northbound trail follows. 2/17/20 30 or more at Elk Pen. Nothing at intersection.
